PERSPECTIVE.

I just stumbled upon these words ( thanks pinterest ) and felt they were pretty applicable to our own "adventures" as of late.  It really is all about how you choose to look at things.- Hannah.

ANNOUNCING...THE CSA!

Now that we have secured a place to grow vegetables this year, we are excited to finally announce our very first, our very only, our very fun CSA 2012! If you are not familiar with the term CSA, it stands for Community Supported Agriculture, but more specifically...it's a subscription to your food. Much like a magazine subscription, you pay in full up front and receive a delivery of vegetables every week for 15 weeks. We will provide you with your own basket and throughout the growing season you will bring your basket every week to a previously determined location and pick up your week's worth of vegetables. The vegetables within the basket vary as the season changes. Here is a sampling of what FRUITS AND VEGETABLES we will be growing this year:

  • Tomatoes (lots of heirloom and classic reds)
  • Melons
  • Peas
  • Beans
  • Lettuce
  • Squash
  • Eggplant
  • Carrots
  • Spinach
  • Peppers (hot and sweet)
  • Beets
  • Basil, Cilantro, Sage, Rosemary, and other herbs
  • ...and so much more!

The PRICING is as follows:

  • $300 for the SMALL SHARE ($20 a week): a peck basket's worth of food. Best for single individual or small family.
  • $450 for the MEDIUM SHARE ($30 a week): a half bushel's worth of food. Best for a family or individuals who eat mostly or only vegetables and cook often.

They will carry on for 15 weeks through the regular season. (A separate 5-10 week fall share will be offered immediately following.) Space is limited! Please reserve your spot as soon as possible. We really want to make this a fully engaging and interactive exchange, offering recipes and farm updates with every basket. Hopefully we will be able to offer the occasional cooking, wine, or beekeeping class as well. We know that for some people, a big basket full of vegetables every week is a new and overwhelming concept, and we hope to make it fun and educational and healthy for your family. Rest assured, there will be NO use of any sort of chemicals or inorganic fertilizers in the garden and you can always ask us about our growing practices––we want you to be confident in where your food is coming from! By purchasing a share, you are not only securing the best, most local, freshest vegetables possible, but you are simultaneously supporting a small family, a small business, and a small farm. We are excited to get this season rolling and hope you are, too! Remember, the amount of shares we can offer is limited so SIGN UP SOON! If you have any questions or confusion, about vegetables or sizes or delivery locations, please let us know.  Thank you!*I know several of you live in the Mount Sterling/Owingsville area and were interested in being a part of our farm this year.  I am so sorry that (at least for now) we won't be living in that area, but please still sign up if you'd like! Our delivery locations are flexible, and we want to get good food to you and your family if you want it! So let us know, and we will work together to try and find a pick-up location and time that works best for us all.

PICK AND CHOOSE.

Jesse and I visited the (new) farm yesterday to find a location where we will build a greenhouse and plant our garden.  After spending the day wandering around and digging some holes, I think we found it! There is even a nearby barn full of amazing old treasures....golf carts, sewing machines, wood stoves, stray cats. If all goes well, we plan on moving out to Danville this weekend and getting to work..and I do mean WORK! It is going to be a busy time, and we couldn't be more excited about it.  After all of this waiting, it finally feels like we are moving forward.- Hannah.

WENDELL'S FIRST WONDERLAND.

Wendell still doesn't sleep through the night––he's just a puppy––and as "parents" we've come to terms with the fact that for now, we don't either. It would be frustrating if he weren't so darn cute. OK, even the cuteness doesn't always trump the frustration but Hannah and I have managed it pretty well so far, taking turns rising in the middle of the night to let him out. So when the whine came at some mockingly-unrealistic hour this morning, and it fell on my turn, I slowly, but dutifully, galumphed out of bed and took Wendell to the door. I was astonished to see the fresh inches of snowfall––more than I've seen in all winter. But imagine Wendell: he was speechless, or the puppy equivalent. He took off running into the powder unconcerned, burying himself, biting every clump of snow in front of him and rolling around indiscriminately. Suddenly, the party stopped as he must've realized he didn't recognize this foreign substance and he bounced back to the sidewalk. When he traverses snow, Wendell uses his hind legs in unison resembling the motions of a 10 pound bunny, but leaves his mouth agape like a vacuum, plowing his way through. For a moment he sat on the wet concrete staring, bewildered and overwhelmed, until he determined that everything was perfectly cool and flung himself back into the whiteness recklessly. Despite my tiredness and the late hour I couldn't deny the pup his first snow experience. And because it has been so unreasonably adorable this morning, we couldn't help but want to share it!- Jesse.
