WHERE THE HEART IS.
This weekend Hannah and I took a quick trip to Bugtussle––again aided by my lovely mother's willingness to watch the animals––to see our mentors, our second home, and our adopted family. We had been able to visit in January before the season started, but since March everybody has been rather tethered to their land––such is farming. So it was nice to get a chance to break away and see the Smith Family, to play with the kids, hear the stories of their crazy season and to unload a few of our troubles, graciously gaining some much needed perspective in return. There's so much to say about that family, that farm: it's our ideal lifestyle and thus an inspiring place for us to return to. But instead of writing a book here about how much we love it, just enjoy some pictures from our trip, and know that many of the hard decisions we'll be facing in the (possibly very) near future were refined over the good food, wine and conversation shared between us.- Jesse.
LOUISVILLE, CONTINUED.
Many many many months ago, I saw that my favorite Rufus Wainwright was playing a show in Louisville in August and bought tickets the day they went on sale. Last week, Jesse and I were shocked to discover that it was AUGUST somehow....seriously, where did it come from? Luckily, Jesse's mother stepped in and saved the day, watching the farm for us and allowing us to stay a few days in Louisville. We haven't been away from the farm...well, EVER...since we moved here earlier in the year. It was a wonderful treat, a chance to catch up with old friends, listen to some magical music, and eat lots of good food. The trip was mostly full of coffee shops, book stores, Indian food, and maybe even some ice cream. We went to Hillbilly Tea, where we had lunch on our wedding day last December....so delicious. We also saw the movie Beasts of the Southern Wild- suspecting it probably wouldn't make it to the Danville Cinemas 8 anytime soon. It was a BEAUTIFUL film! Basically, we had a great time feeling like "city folks" for a couple days...walking around town, eating brunch, staying out late. But it was quickly back to the farm life for us....chasing down escaped rabbits and harvesting melons and trying to contain the overflowing tomato pile on our kitchen counters. And we wouldn't have it any other way.
CITY FOLKS.
Greetings from LOUISVILLE! Jesse and I are spending a few days in one of our favorite cities (we spent a pretty special day here last year). We are so thankful to Jesse's dear mother for farm-sitting for us and allowing us a worry free, mini vacation! We will be back to posting soon, with a recap of our trip AND yet another new addition to the Rough Draft family (Yup....more animals).
FIELD TO FORK.
Jesse and I took a week off of our CSA delivering duties (my amazing mother rose to the task) so we could work the Field to Fork Festival in Paint Lick, Kentucky. It was an amazing event - and we were honored to be there representing Bluebird Cafe. Bluebird is a new-ish restaurant located in Stanford, not far from us in Danville. Open for breakfast and lunch, they source their meats and produce from local FARMERS! We love any place that we can eat a burger and actually feel good about it! So when they needed help for this event on Saturday, we were excited to join them!
The festival was a full day of workshops - ranging from beekeeping and beer brewing to composting and seed bombing. There were many different booths - all with Kentucky Proud products - people selling wools and fibers, honey, watermelons, homemade ice cream, Ale-8, and our dear friends at Sweetgrass with their granola. It was a great day - fun to meet lots of new folks, sell lots of delicious pear salad wraps, and plunge ourselves deeper into the community. This is an annual event, too, so be sure not to miss it next year!
