POPPING GARLIC.
It is that time of year....leaves are falling, the weather is turning cool, and we find ourselves spending hours and hours in the upper loft of the barn. Popping garlic.Bugtussle has been saving their own garlic seed for years, meaning we set aside several hundred bulbs in the spring to replant. That also means that now we must pop open each bulb to remove the individual cloves. I both love and hate this chore. It usually coincides with autumn and sweaters and it is not exactly labor-intensive. But my fingers. Oh, my fingers. It is a special kind of pain....and we aren't yet half way through!Worth it, though. For fresh garlic, it is definitely worth the pain.- Hannah.
BROODING ONE CHICK.
Brooding only one chick is the most ridiculous thing. Truly. It means sometimes starting a fire in the woodstove before we leave for market....just for her so she won't get too cold. It means digging through the dirt outside to find worms and grubs that we then have to mash up with our fingers for her. It means coming home to find that she has jumped out of her little box and pooped all over the floor. And all of this for what could actually be a HE.But....it also means lots of cuteness. So I guess we will keep it up.
A DAY IN PHOTOS: BIRTHDAY IN BG.
Since my birthday fell on a Friday, it was mostly filled with harvest and being exhausted. We decided to take the following Tuesday and Wednesday and spend the night in Bowling Green, where we deliver our CSA. Although the highlight was honestly probably taking a shower in the hotel (the creeks been a little too cold lately), we also did lots of thrift and antique shopping, and lots of eating of good foods. We are sort of in love with this town.- Hannah.
