HITTING OUR CEILING.

The insulation is officially done, which means that at one point this past weekend, I was standing (or balancing) on a piece of old, oak barn wood ten feet above our floor, precariously stapling insulation into our ceiling. As wild as that might sound, in reality, it went really well. In fact, it's given us the confidence that we should be able to hang our own drywall as well (or at least it's given us the delusion that we can do so), which we had been considering paying someone to do. Drywall should begin this week, in fact. And as soon as that's in, and the stove pipe is up, we can finally install ourselves!- Jesse.insulating. insulating. insulating. insulating.stove!

CABIN PROGRESS.

new flooring!Cabin progress was rather unexciting this week, as much of it involved insulating, insulating, and more insulating. But some new developments: Jesse and Eric started installing the stove pipe, which involved cutting a hole in the into the bedroom floor and building a funny little contraption on the ceiling (very technical terms, I know. Clearly I was not involved in this project). We also were given the most wonderful of gifts by the Smiths - some beautiful hardwood flooring! Jesse and I were planning on sticking with the good ol' plywood sheet flooring for the time being - maybe painting and sealing it, but nothing fancy. So this new flooring is truly a surprise for us - and we are loving the way it looks so far!We also worked on our inherited high tunnel this week - removing the old plastic that is ragged and torn in hopes of one day reframing the ends of the tunnel and attaching new plastic. Slowly but surely, things are taking shape!- Hannah.installing the stove pipe. hole for the stove pipe.new flooring! installing the floor! raggedy high tunnel plastic.removing the plastic from the high tunnel.

CABIN PROGRESS.

We finished insulating all the walls of the cabin and made some crazy looking stairs for the front porch. We are hoping that when we return from the Green Living Fair this weekend, we can finish insulating the ceiling, install the woodstove, and then drywall!insulating.insulating. insulating.insulating. new stairs!

LET'S GO CEDARING.

cutting cedar logs. cutting cedar logs. wendell watches. We already knew that covering the house entirely in cedar shakes we made ourselves was a little unrealistic.....but it's a little unrealistic. I personally love the process, the felling of the trees, the wrestling with the shakes, the entire physicality of it––but it is a long process. So this week, we've decided to start cutting down logs to help take some of the pressure off of the shake-making. Eric and Cher are planning to bring a portable sawmill to the farm, and we thought we'd have some lumber of our own milled while we had the chance. So, the house is now going to be partially sided in shakes, partially in rough sawn cedar lumber, and we're actually looking forward to how it's (hopefully) going to turn out.- Jesse.
