BELATED.

jesse. This is belated, but I wanted to say happy birthday to this guy. His birthday was on Sunday, and here's how he spent the day: chasing Trousers around the yard with a stick each time he escaped from his paddock, hauling over 1000 pounds of sweet potatoes and regular potatoes upstairs to our loft in the cabin, chopping firewood and kindling in the rain, moving the turkeys into a new part of the garden, and harvesting sweet peppers and spaghetti squash. Happy birthday indeed! Jesse is the hardest working person I know - this is a pretty typical day around the farm. I am constantly amazed at how he provides for our little family and couldn't be prouder to know him and work alongside him every day. Happy birthday Jesse! I love you and here's to the next year - I think it's going to be a good one.- Hannah.

OLD KENTUCKY HOME.

I am back home in old Versailles (KENTUCKY, that is) for Christmas. Yes, I singular, because Jesse and I have to stagger our Christmas trip so that the farm is only unwatched for a couple of days. I come early, Jesse will stay a few days after Christmas. Oh, farming and traveling. It just isn't a possible thing. So today I am missing my husband and my cabin and my woodstove. But I am enjoying  my family and extended internet time (overdosing on pinterest and signing up for healthcare). What are your traveling plans? How do you farmer folk manage the holiday season?- Hannah.stove.

REAPING WHAT YOU SOW.

Possibly the only thing better than a home-cooked meal is a homegrown one. And although our dinner this evening wasn't comprised solely of our own food, it did contain a little chard and kale we grew together, picked together and prepared together excitedly––the first things we've eaten out of our garden this year! I suppose to a farmer, it's akin to the first dollar a new business makes, or the first time an artist sells a painting, book or record...and we felt like we'd done something spectacular. There will be much more food to come––hopefully innumerable dinners will spill from our gardens––but we wanted to hang this one up here on our blog, to frame it, to show it off to our readers: the first meal we grew as husband and wife, in our garden, together.- Jesse.

A DAY IN PHOTOS - OUR VALENTINES DAY.

Greetings from New York City!  Yep, Jesse and I hopped in the car yesterday and headed north.  It was COMPLETELY spontaneous!  I am writing this from Park Slope in Brooklyn, just having devoured my first authentic New York bagel.  This is Jesse's old stomping ground, so I am excited to be here with him, meeting all his friends and learning about this part of his past.  But more on that later.First, some photos of our Valentine's dinner.  It was very simple and homemade. Jesse surprised me by making potato gnocchi, which is my favorite!  I wanted to bake a Red Velvet cake, as I have never had one and it seemed appropriate for the holiday.  I am highly allergic to red food coloring, so I used beets!  We also each made gifts for each other, which was pretty sweet. What did you guys do for Valentines?- Hannah.
