THE CLEAN UP.
Packing and cleaning don't make the best blog posts, but if you're wondering what we've been up to it's been a whole lot of that! In fact, we've spent much of the last few days deconstructing the garden, and cursing ourselves for being so thorough when we put it up!We've also received two really sweet articles about our fundraising endeavor. The first was from Need More Acres in Bowling Green, Ky, which, if you're in the area tomorrow, please stop by Community Farmers Market and thank this family for us. And give them big hugs! They are donating all of their sales from this weekend to our campaign and we are deeply, tearfully thankful. Then the wonderful Savoring Kentucky posted a more-than-generous article about us and our campaign. We're speechless, or moved beyond words to be more accurate. This outpouring of support has been incredible and we can't wait to pay it back however we can, whenever we can, as often as we can.In moments like these––with this amount of tremendous support––we not only feel we can accomplish our goal, but that Kentucky can accomplish just about anything. The more we can chip in to help one injured set of farmers, the more others in the farming community can be less afraid of being crippled by disastrous circumstances. In a community, people live with less fear because, as we mentioned in an earlier post, when they fall, they fall into the arms of others. We're so thankful, but we're also equally excited to one day be able to return the favor, to help our community remain strong. We're over half-way to our goal! iIf you'd like to donate please follow this link. Every little bit helps!- Jesse.
SUSTAINABLE KENTUCKY.
We wanted to share that we are featured in Sustainable Kentucky's Young Farmer Series today! We LOVE Sustainable Kentucky - it is an invaluable source of information for Kentuckians - whether you are looking for a farmer near you, want to learn about keeping chickens in the city, or just need a recipe for strawberry salsa. We got to meet with Jamie of Sustainable Kentucky a few weeks back, and she has truly become a good friend who we seem to bump into every few days! She is a busy woman, and her website is so well organized and put together - I am jealous! Anyway, she has been interviewing several different young Kentucky farmers for her Young Farmer Series, so check it out! Also, make sure to see the first article about Jacob and Carolyn at SWEETGRASS!
Thank you Sustainable Kentucky!
THE BLOG LOOKS WEIRD, AND OTHER NEWS.
Ya'll. I have no idea why the blog looks so strange. For some reason, all of the crazy coding and html and nonsense that I spent so long trying to understand has just disappeared....so the blog became a complete jumble of words and posts and tabs. I was able to fix some of it, and will try to work on it soon....but we have been in the library for 3 hours now and mostly I just want to cry.ANYway. Surprise! We have a new addition to Rough Draft! This one was a necessity, however, as the mice situation inside of our house has been out of control lately. Meet Gladdie...our slightly cross-eyed, wheezing, snaggletoothed, and possibly blind kitten. Yeah, we know how to pick 'em.- Hannah.
INTRODUCING: THE RECIPE TAB.
Lambsquarters is the type of vegetable primed to garner a few question marks on the brows of your patrons––then radishes, then swiss chard––but these are foods we love and foods we want to share with our shareholders and friends––the garden seems to like em' as well! Anyway, with each one of our baskets we're going to be adding recipes to the blog under our brand new RECIPE tab. Each week we'll add more recipes, and every year we'll add to those until we have infinity (rough estimate). We hope to accumulate more and more recipes through our own experiments and through the shared experiments of our shareholders, so there will always be new ideas to cook the things we grow and our shareholders will never be able to feel discouraged. We have loved hearing from you about what you are cooking this week with your shares! So keep sending us your ideas from this week, or any week.... we'd love to add them to the blog! Here is one you'll find under "radishes" that we tried this past week. It was amazing! Enjoy!Wilted Greens Salad and Radishes..serves two..3 small radishes and greens1 t vinegar (apple cider or champagne preferably)several leaves lambsquarters1/2 bunch kale1/2 bunch swiss Chard1/4 stick butter (or cook diced bacon and keep both bacon and fat)2 eggs1/2 cup walnutsDice radishes small, put in cup and add vinegar––stir and let sit. Toast walnuts in oven. Heat butter on med-low heat in large sauté pan. Chop and add lambsquarters, kale, radish greens and chard to melting butter and stir for a couple minutes or until tender––if they're getting crispy it's too hot/not enough butter. Pour radishes over greens and cook for one minute. Stir in walnuts and put on plate. Fry or poach eggs and place overtop. Serve with garlic bread. You can also add cheese over the eggs––parmigiano preferably––or more greens as you please.
